Post-Operative Care Instructions for Eyelid Surgery at Gangnam Seoyeon Plastic Surgery
Essential post-operative care guide for eyelid surgery, including wound management, ointment application, and emergency protocols for a safe recovery.

Post-Operative Care Instructions for Eyelid Surgery
1. After eyelid surgery, a small amount of blood may seep from the incision site. This is a common symptom. If you gently wipe it away with gauze, a light scab will eventually form and the bleeding will stop.
2. When scabs usually form the day after surgery, do not leave them alone. Apply the prescribed ointment and gently wipe them away. If bleeding occurs, simply wipe it off and it will stop.
3. If scabs form again, apply ointment once more to remove them. Keeping the wound free of blood clots and scabs ensures faster healing and minimizes scarring.
4. Apply the ointment about 3 times a day. Keep the area slightly greasy (like oily skin) until the stitches are removed. Discontinue use after the stitches have been taken out.
5. Do not apply the ointment for a prolonged period after stitch removal, as this can occasionally cause dermatitis.
6. If you purchase or apply scar ointment, please wait at least 1 week after stitch removal. If it stings upon application, it means the wound is not yet ready; in such cases, wait until 1 month after stitch removal before applying.
7. Emergencies: While emergencies are rare after eyelid surgery, capillaries cauterized during lower blepharoplasty may burst due to various causes (coughing, lowering the head, etc.), causing the wound to bleed and swell. In such cases, one side may swell severely (resembling a boxer’s swollen eye) to the point where the eye cannot open, and a blood clot must be removed at the clinic. Unless it is an extreme case, you can visit the clinic the following day for removal. Please call your designated coordinator.
8. Even after the stitches are removed, you must be careful when washing your face. Applying excessive pressure can cause the wound to open, so please be cautious for up to 3 weeks post-surgery. It is best to wash lightly with only water.
9. Activities that soak the skin, such as swimming or saunas, should be avoided until 3 weeks after surgery.
10. Makeup is possible on areas other than the wound after stitch removal, but eye makeup is recommended 1 to 2 weeks after stitch removal. Makeup powder entering the wound is detrimental to healing.
11. Occasionally, small pieces of thread may emerge even after stitches are removed. These are medical-grade threads and do not cause major issues, but if found, please visit the clinic so we can remove them. Sometimes scabs are mistaken for threads. In some cases, the thread used to fix the double eyelid may emerge; if this happens after 1 month, removing it will not cause the double eyelid to unravel.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I apply ointment after eye surgery?
You should apply the ointment about three times a day until the stitches are removed. If you continue to apply ointment for a long period after stitch removal, dermatitis may occasionally occur, so it is best to stop using it. For scar ointment, please start applying it at least one week after stitch removal.
When and how should I wash my face after surgery?
Light water washing is possible after the stitches are removed. However, until 3 weeks after surgery, you should be careful not to open the wound, so it is recommended to wash your face gently without rubbing too hard.
When can I apply eye makeup after surgery?
It is recommended to apply eye makeup 1 to 2 weeks after the stitches are removed. If foreign substances such as makeup powder enter the wound area, it is not good for recovery, so it is best to start eye makeup after the wound has safely healed to some extent.
A blood scab has formed on the surgical site, can I remove it?
Yes, it is best to gently wipe it off while applying ointment. Keeping the wound area free of blood scabs will speed up wound healing and leave fewer scars later. Even if it bleeds, wiping it a little will stop it quickly.
What should I do if one eye swells severely after lower eyelid surgery?
You should visit the hospital immediately to have the pooled blood clot removed. This could be an emergency situation where a cauterized capillary has burst due to coughing or bending your head, causing bleeding and swelling, so you should visit the hospital even the next day to receive appropriate treatment.
