Non-Incisional Suture Removal: 20 Frequently Asked Questions (Part 1: 1-10)

Today, we have prepared a post to answer the most frequently asked questions about ‘non-incisional suture removal,’ as many patients visit our clinic for this procedure.

Q1. Does removing the non-incisional sutures always result in the double eyelid unfolding?

In most cases, the double eyelid does unfold, but there are instances where it does not.

Since non-incisional suture removal is a procedure to remove the thread rather than a surgery specifically designed to ‘undo’ the double eyelid, removing the thread doesn’t guaranteed it will unfold. The crease might disappear completely, unfold on only one side, or remain on both sides.

Because of this, the procedure can potentially result in asymmetry.

Q2. If I want to remove the sutures after a non-incisional double eyelid surgery, when is the best time?

If you wish to remove the sutures after non-incisional surgery, it is best to do it as soon as possible before adhesions become stronger.

The earlier the sutures are removed, the better.

Q3. What kind of anesthesia is used for suture removal?

It is usually performed under local anesthesia.

The procedure is very quick, typically finishing within 10 to 15 minutes.

Q4. Is there severe swelling after suture removal? How many days does the swelling last?

Swelling after suture removal varies by patient, but generally, major swelling subsides within 1 to 2 weeks, and minor swelling resolves within about a month.

Rather than swelling, some bruising may occur, which usually improves within 2 weeks.

Q5. What is the scarring like after suture removal?

Scarring from suture removal occurs minimally at the puncture sites and fades over time.

We may make up to three small punctures of about 2–3mm. While these scars fade, they may be more visible in the early stages compared to a standard non-incisional surgery where the scars are hidden within the double eyelid fold.

Because the puncture marks from suture removal are not hidden by a crease, a faint mark may be visible when you close your eyes for about 6 months. This mark is usually easily covered with makeup and is not visible when your eyes are open.

After 6 months, the scars are barely visible, but if you are very sensitive to scarring, it is something to consider carefully.

Q6. When can I start applying skin and eye makeup after suture removal?

We recommend waiting at least 2 weeks for both skin and eye makeup. Since healing times vary for everyone, it is best to apply makeup only after the puncture sites have fully healed.

Q7. I had natural adhesion surgery with dissolvable threads. Can these be removed too?

If dissolvable threads were used, it is best to remove them before they dissolve, typically within 1 week of the original surgery.

After that, removal can be difficult, so an incisional method might be recommended instead.

Q8. Does ‘unfolding of adhesions’ mean returning to a completely monolid state?

Yes, if the adhesions are fully released, the eye returns to a monolid state.

Q9. When should I start applying scar ointments like Dermatix or Contractubex?

Scar ointments should be used after the stitches are removed and the wound has fully closed. This is usually about 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure.

Q10. Can I have revision surgery to create a lower line after removing the sutures?

If the adhesions are released after suture removal, revision surgery is certainly possible.

Some patients ask if it’s possible to perform a non-incisional revision at the same time as the suture removal. This depends on the individual case—it may be possible for some and not for others—so an in-person consultation is necessary to determine the best approach.
